The City Council this week denied a claim by Eleanor Rodriguez, the mother of a man struck and killed in a crosswalk in January, that sought $750,000 in damages. Rodriguez said her son, Manuel Ayala, 51, was crossing Chapman Avenue at Melody Lane when he was struck by a speeding vehicle. Rodriguez and other residents who live along Chapman Avenue allege that the crosswalk is unsafe and inadequately maintained.

In response to growing concerns, the city’s Traffic and Safety Commission will discuss the safety of the Chapman Avenue/Melody Lane area March 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room, near City Hall, 401 E. Chapman Ave. The meeting is open to the public. Information: (714) 993-8245
