The mother of a young man who died at Orange Coast College in August has filed a claim seeking unspecified financial damages from the college over its handling of her son’s death. Daniel Edwards, 20, a freshman who hoped to play on the school’s football team, collapsed and died in the locker room after picking up his practice gear Aug. 3. An autopsy determined Edwards died of a heart condition called myocarditis. On Feb. 1, just days before the statute of limitations expired, Edwards’ mother, Ruthie Marlow, filed a claim against the college. Through her lawyer, Todd B. Becker of Huntington Beach, Marlow charged that the college “failed to provide reasonable care and assistance” at the time of her son’s collapse. She also alleged that the locker-room area was not properly supervised, leading to an inadequate response that ultimately resulted in his death. The college’s board of trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to deny Marlow’s claim. Vice Chancellor John Renley said the claim would be turned over to the Coast Community College District’s insurance company, which would make a decision about whether to pay any damages.
