Two Ventura girls were injured Monday afternoon when they darted into traffic and were struck by a car on Loma Vista Road just east of Palomares Avenue, authorities said.

Both girls were being treated Monday night at Ventura County Medical Center, Ventura Police Sgt. Randy Janes said.

One girl, 5, suffered a broken hip. The other girl, described as an older sister and between 8 and 10 years old, was being treated for cuts and scrapes, law enforcement officials said.

A hospital nursing supervisor said the girls were in stable condition.

The accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m., when the girls tried to cross Loma Vista, Janes said. A car traveling in a slow lane stopped, but a second car in a fast lane apparently did not see the youngsters and struck them, Janes said.

Janes said the driver whose car struck the girls is a woman who works in the area. He did not release her name and said she had not been cited.

The girls live in a nearby neighborhood, Janes said.
