KCOP Donation Gives CSUN Newscast New Look

Share

Cal State Northridge’s student-run newscast, “Valley View,” has a new look due to a set donated by KCOP-TV Channel 13.

Previously, students producing the weekly show had to use a makeshift set with a wooden desk, a couple of nondescript chairs and a gray wall as a backdrop.

“We looked like we did it out of a closet,” said Rick Marks, CSUN journalism professor. “We look great now. It’s just much more professional.”

The half-hour “Valley View” newscast is produced once a week and aired on three local cable outlets. This semester, the class, Advanced Television Production, has also begun producing a 10-minute Spanish version.

“CSUN was first on my list when I started looking around for someone to donate the news set to because of the quality of the CSUN grads working for me,” said Adam P. Bradshaw, manager of KCOP news operations.

Marks said that the idea to donate the set to the class came from a CSUN journalism school graduate, who is an associate producer at KCOP.

The set has a cityscape backdrop behind an 11-foot-long desk with built-in monitors. Its value is estimated at $75,000.
