The Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department is encouraging individuals and small or emerging arts organizations to apply for 55 grants ranging from $1,500 to $10,000.

The goal of the 1999-2000 Regional Arts Grants is to support the creative arts through community participation. Dance, literary arts, photography, music, and the performing and visual arts are among the eligible disciplines.

The department honored 32 artists and 19 locally based small arts associations last year in theater, visual arts, dance and music.

Free workshops are being offered throughout the San Fernando Valley, two in March and three in April, to answer questions and assist applicants.

Each recipient has to share its project with the community in some form, whether it’s poetry readings, a play performance or a mural.

Applications are available in public libraries, city community arts centers, City Council field offices, regional arts workshops and the Cultural Affairs Department.

The first workshops are March 26, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Road Theatre Company, 5108 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, and 3 to 5 p.m. in the Van Nuys Library, 6250 Sylmar Ave.

For the April schedule and information, call the grants division at (213) 620-8635.
