* The number of Americans filing for jobless benefits for the first time rose a scant 1,000 to 289,000 in the week ended March 6, the Labor Department said, reporting the longest run of new claims under 300,000 since 1974. The figure for the previous week was revised upward from 286,000. The four-week average of claims grew to 292,250 from 291,000 a week earlier.
