Once Again, Flyers Fail to End Streak

Joe Sakic and Adam Deadmarsh capitalized on Philadelphia giveaways to score 16 seconds apart in the second period as the Colorado Avalanche extended the Flyers’ longest winless streak in nine years with a 5-3 victory Thursday night at Philadelphia.

The Flyers are winless in their last nine games (0-6-3), their longest such streak since going 0-7-3 early in the 1989-90 season.

Patrick Roy stopped 33 shots and moved past Terry Sawchuk into second place on the all-time victory list with 502 regular-season and playoff wins.

Philadelphia’s Eric Lindros had his 38th goal, along with an assist, to tie for the NHL goal-scoring lead with injured teammate John LeClair.

Toronto 2, New York Islanders 1--Curtis Joseph stopped 41 shots at Uniondale, N.Y., as the Maple Leafs moved to within five points of Northeast Division-leading Ottawa.

The 42 shots for the Islanders, who are winless in six games (0-4-2), was their highest total since Jan. 7, 1997 when they had 50 shots in a 5-3 home loss to Pittsburgh.

Florida 2, Washington 1--Radek Dvorak’s breakaway goal and Sean Burke’s strong goaltending led the Panthers at Washington in a game between teams battling for a playoff spot.

Burke made 26 saves as the Panthers moved within a point of eighth-place Boston in the Eastern Conference. Washington is 1-3 on its current home stand.

Vancouver 3, Phoenix 0--Alexander Mogilny had a goal and an assist and Garth Snow stopped 33 shots at Phoenix as the Canucks snapped a five-game winless streak.

Snow, starting for the 10th time in 13 games, recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

Tampa Bay 5, Buffalo 2--Five players scored and Corey Schwab made 35 saves as the Lightning defeated the struggling Sabres at Buffalo.

The Lightning rebounded from two road losses in which they were outscored, 15-4, to win in Buffalo for the first time since October 1996.

Montreal 3, St. Louis 0--Jeff Hackett stopped 41 shots at St. Louis and Dainius Zubrus scored in his first game with the Canadiens, who extended the Blues’ losing streak to a season-high four games.

Zubrus was acquired from Philadelphia on Wednesday in the trade that sent Mark Recchi to the Flyers. He quickly made his presence felt by scoring just 3:20 into the game.

The Edmonton Oilers traded goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov to Phoenix for a fifth-round pick in next year’s entry draft. Shtalenkov played 34 games this season, posting a 12-17-3 record with a 2.67 goals-against average. The Oilers also announced that left wing Ryan Smyth, who suffered a broken jaw during Wednesday night’s 7-4 loss at Dallas, will be sidelined indefinitely. . . . Buffalo swapped forwards with Pittsburgh, sending Matthew Barnaby to the Penguins for Stu Barnes.
