A funeral service for Maxine Cunningham will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Shepherd of the Hills Church, 19700 Rinaldi St. in Northridge. Burial will follow at Oakwood Memorial Park, 22601 Lassen St. in Chatsworth.

Cunningham, 55, a counselor at Monroe High School in North Hills, died last week in an automobile accident in North Hills.

On Monday, faculty, students and staff mourned Cunningham, whom they called Max. She served as a career advisor and work experience coordinator for six years at the school, networking with businesses to get students jobs and helping kids with their resumes, said Assistant Principal Thane Opfell.

“She did many things that went beyond the general description of career advisor,” Opfell said. “She stood head and shoulder above everybody just by her dedication to the kids and her work ethic.”

She was born in Mobile, Ala., and moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s.

Cunningham, of Pacoima, worked 27 years with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Before going to Monroe High, she taught English at Harte Prep School in Los Angeles and Sepulveda Middle School in North Hills.

Cunningham is survived by one sister and eight brothers.
