Gov. Gray Davis on Monday named Karen A. Getman, a campaign finance and elections lawyer, as chairwoman of the Fair Political Practices Commission.

Getman, 40, of San Francisco, is the first woman to lead the commission, according to the governor’s office. Getman has more than 10 years experience in campaign finance and election law.

The FPPC enforces the Political Reform Act, the state’s campaign finance and election law that was adopted by voters in 1974 after the Watergate scandal.

Getman replaces James Hall, an appointee of former Gov. Pete Wilson. The position pays $101,212 and requires state Senate confirmation.

Getman earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and graduated from Harvard Law School.
