Phil Nevin is confused. After sharing catching duties last season with Matt Walbeck, he entered camp expecting to challenge for the starting job, but he caught for only the second time this spring in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Nevin, a converted infielder, has spent more time at first base and in the outfield.

“I don’t know what spot I’m competing for,” said Nevin, who is batting .125 (two for 16). “It’s disappointing. I feel I’ve come a long way defensively, not only throwing guys out, but receiving the ball and calling games, and I would like to think someone has noticed that.”

While Manager Terry Collins appreciated the job Nevin did behind the plate in 1998, he’s not sure Nevin can compete defensively with Walbeck, Charlie O’Brien and Todd Greene.

“Phil has to make this team as a utility guy, and a guy who can come off the bench and get a hit,” Collins said. “He’s going to catch, play first, the outfield, and I’m even going to play him at third. He’s doing exactly what we got him for. He did not come here just to catch. We have four catchers here, and it’s going to be tough for him to catch more.”
