First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea, arrived Sunday in Egypt on the first leg of a three-nation North African tour that has been billed as a bridge-building mission between the United States and the Islamic world.

Starting a 12-day tour of Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, Clinton was aiming on her first day to highlight Islamic contributions to culture as a way to help dispel distrust that has strained relations since the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

Their first sightseeing tour in Cairo took them to the alabaster Mohammed Ali mosque within the walls of Islamic Cairo’s Citadel.

She and Chelsea will ride camels into the desert in Morocco.

During the four-day stay in Egypt, Clinton will meet with President Hosni Mubarak and his wife, tour the Khan Khalili bazaar in Cairo, and give speeches at a youth center and at the American University in Cairo.

Clinton is scheduled to make several speeches during her tour, including an address on women’s rights in Tunisia.
