About UCLA: For three years, Maylana Martin has displayed All-American basketball skills any post player would aspire to: Shot-making, rebounding, shot-blocking . . . even running the court. Saturday, she added another element: Command. When point guard Erica Gomez went down with a sprained ankle less than a minute into the UCLA-Colorado State game, Martin took charge. She was animated, vocal and many commented they’d never seen her play with such authority. Her coach noticed. “When Erica went down, May’s attitude immediately was, ‘OK, we are not going to lose this game.’ All of a sudden, she was bringing the ball up the court, making herself available in Colorado State’s press,” Kathy Olivier said. UCLA will try to make much-faster Louisiana Tech play a half-court game. “We’re strong in the post, we feel we can play half-court with anyone,” she said.

About Louisiana Tech: The Lady Techsters’ best chance, everyone agreed Sunday, is a track meet. “We need to force a lot of turnovers to start our running game,” Leon Barmore said. “If we let them set up in a half-court game and let them kick the ball in to those big centers, we can’t win.” So a certainty here is an on-ball pressure defense the likes of which UCLA hasn’t seen since its 100-77 loss at Tennessee in December. As guard Tamicha Jackson put it: “If you can’t play pressure defense at La. Tech, you don’t play.” And the best Lady Techster defender is Monica Maxwell, thought to be a WNBA prospect. Barmore: “I feel good about Monica guarding any perimeter player in the country.”
