GARDEN GROVE

Los Amigos High School in Fountain Valley--part of Garden Grove Unified--recently placed fourth in the 31st annual Orange County Academic Decathlon. Coached by faculty advisor Bill Hawley, the team collected medals at a recent awards banquet for its record among 25 Orange County public high schools.

Along with team honors, Los Amigos students earned recognition for their individual contributions in the Academic Decathlon, including the first-place award for best overall individual performance earned by senior Angela Mauro of Garden Grove; she finished second in economics, third in social studies and fourth in art and language-literature. She also received the $1,000 Robert Peterson Scholarship Award. Others earning individual awards: Nick Le, third in economics and fourth in social studies; Teresa Tovar, fourth in art and fifth in interview; Michele Gajewski, second in economics, third in speech and fourth in language-literature; and Jon Vu, fourth in social studies.
