Cox Uses Arm, Bat to Bury Valencia

Valencia High learned first-hand Tuesday exactly why Jodie Cox is the region’s top returning player.

Cox, Valley player of the year last season, pitched a two-hitter, hit two home runs and drove in six runs for Quartz Hill in a 6-0 nonleague victory at Quartz Hill.

Cox (9-1), a senior left-hander who has committed to Cal State Fullerton, was three for three, including a second-inning grand slam, and struck out eight batters.

The Rebels (9-1), ranked No. 4 in the region by The Times, won their eighth consecutive game.

Simi Valley 3, Saugus 0--Brittney Green pitched a three-hitter and the Pioneers (8-0) capitalized on two errors to win a nonleague game at Saugus.

Simi Valley, ranked No. 9, got the only run it needed in the first when Cindy Gray scored on an error.

Another Saugus error aided a two-run Simi Valley rally in the third.

Gray had three hits, including a double.

Green (6-0) struck out four and walked three.

Hart 4, Alemany 1--Amanda Fortune and Lindsey Kontra combined on a one-hitter and the No. 6-ranked Indians (5-1-1) won a nonleague game at Alemany.

Kontra pitched four innings of hitless relief, striking out four.

Sara Dean of Hart hit a home run, and Jocelyn Evans and Carly Caldaronello each had two hits.

Sylmar 9, Canoga Park 0--Casondra Acosta pitched a no-hitter, striking out six and walking two, and the Spartans (6-4, 1-0) won a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park.

Camarillo 4, Rio Mesa 0--Melissa Ziese and Alana Mendoza each had two hits, and Kathryn Nevard (6-0) pitched a two-hitter for the No. 2-ranked Scorpions (7-0, 3-0) in a Pacific View League victory at Rio Mesa.

Royal 8, Moorpark 0--Carrie Harvey (1-0) pitched a two-hitter, struck out three and walked one for the Highlanders in a Marmonte League game at Moorpark.

Paraclete 10, Louisville 7--Lauren McDonald hit a two-run triple in the top of the ninth to break a 7-7 tie for the Spirits (5-2) in a nonleague victory at Louise Park.

Jessica Green and Andrea DeLuna homered for Louisville (2-2).

Hoover 4, Canyon 3--Cori Herbert (7-2) pitched a two-hitter, struck out 13 and hit a single and triple for the Tornadoes (7-2) in a nonleague victory at Canyon.

Nordhoff 14, Bishop Diego 5--Sarah Chambers had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs for the Rangers (3-3) in a nonleague victory at Bishop Diego.

Burroughs 9, Glendale 3--Amanda Colon and Vanessa Menchaca hit a three-run triples for the Indians (3-4) in a nonleague victory at Glendale.

La Reina 11, Mayfield 0--Kristen Ward had three hits, four RBIs and pitched two innings of perfect relief for the Regents (5-2) in a nonleague game at La Reina.
