Duke (28-6) vs. Georgia (27-6), 4 p.m., ESPN--Coach Gail Goestenkors’ Blue Devils, led by senior center Michele VanGorp and senior guard Nicole Erickson from Brea Olinda High, lost three of their first four games but reached San Jose with their stunning 69-63 victory over Tennessee on Monday. Georgia’s Andy Landers is sometimes called the best coach never to win a national title. He has been in the tournament 15 times and has reached five Final Fours. He brings the best twins in the women’s game since USC’s Pam and Paula McGee of the early 1980s. Kelly and Coco Miller are 5-foot-10 sophomores, Kelly averaging 18.6 points per game, Coco 18.4. Each player scored her 1,000th point in her 57th game. In Georgia’s regional-winning 89-71 win over Iowa State, Kelly was the leader, making her first seven shots and finishing with six three-point baskets.

GAME 2

* Purdue (32-1) vs. Louisiana Tech (30-2), 6:30 p.m., ESPN--To many, especially those who saw them take apart UCLA, 88-62, the Lady Techsters could be considered the favorite. They’re not that big, but they can jump. Somewhere in the middle of Louisiana Tech’s 53-30 second-half blowout of UCLA on Monday, 5-foot-9 Monica Maxwell had her hand over the rim on a tip-in. She’s thought to be a WNBA draft pick, as is, a year from now, 5-5 guard Tamicha Jackson, whose fire, speed and energy level remind many of premier ABL/South Carolina guard Shannon Johnson. One thing’s for sure: This is by far the best in transition of the four teams here and if Louisiana Tech gets 13 steals, as it did against UCLA, the Lady Techsters will be playing on Sunday. Purdue brings the best perimeter game in the country, featuring Stephanie White-McCarty. She’s a 5-11 senior with superb passing skills and is shooting 44.5% from three-point range. Senior guard Ukari Figgs is good for 16 points and four assists per game. And sophomore Katie Douglas shoots 36% from outside and scores 14.1 per game. Said Rutgers Coach Vivian Stringer: “They can decide things in a blink--in three minutes, they can take you out of a game.” Louisiana Tech eliminated Purdue last season, 72-65.
