Vivaldi, Bach, Sammartini Return
Period instruments will resound during most of the 19th annual Baroque Music Festival Corona del Mar, to be held June 20-27 at two locations: St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church and the Sherman Library and Gardens.
The festival will open June 20 at 4 p.m. at St. Michael with festival director Burton Karson conducting works by Corrette, Sammartini and Vivaldi. Marianne Pfau will be the recorder soloist in a rarely heard concerto for soprano recorder by Sammartini. Other soloists will be organist Gabriel Arregui and violinist Rob Diggins.
An organ recital by Ladd Thomas, chairman of the organ department at the University of Southern California, will be held at the church June 21 at 8 p.m. The program will include works by Bach and Richard Arnell.
A chamber music program of works for tenor and baritone as well as string ensemble will be performed June 23 at 8 p.m. at the Sherman Library. The evening will conclude with the parody cantata “Iphigenia in Brooklyn” by P.D.Q. Bach. A second chamber music program will be held Friday at 8 p.m. at the library. The program will include music by Telemann, Bach, Dario Castello, Scarlatti and Stravinsky. Modern instruments will be used in this concert.
The festival will conclude June 27 at 4 p.m. at the church with Karson leading Albinoni’s Magnificat and Vivaldi’s “Beatus Vir.”
Subscriptions for four concerts (not including the Monday organ recital) are $75. Single ticket prices are $30 for Wednesday and Friday concerts at Sherman Library, $25 for Sunday concerts at the church, and $10 for the Monday organ recital. (949) 760-7887.
