More than 50 downtown galleries and shops will open their doors today and into the night to exhibit the work of more than 100 local artists.

From 1 to 10 p.m., as many as 10,000 visitors are expected for Ventura’s ArtWalk, which focuses on environmental awareness as well as local art.

“It’s a fun, casual opportunity to get out and enjoy the arts, get to know more about what’s going on in our arts community. And it’s for all generations--a lot of free, fun stuff to do,” said Cassandra Petrovich, Ventura’s cultural affairs supervisor.

At the request of artists and patrons, today’s ArtWalk will begin in the afternoon. Previous events have begun in the evening.

South American and Native American music and storytelling are among the day’s entertainment.

In Plaza Park, at Santa Clara and Oak streets, artist M.B. Hanrahan will create a temporary sculpture out of recyclable materials. Visitors may contribute plastic bottles and grocery bags, aluminum cans, newspapers and Styrofoam cups for use in the sculpture.

Ventura’s next ArtWalks will be held in July and October.
