William Wright Newton Jr.; Retired Businessman

Simi Valley resident William Wright Newton Jr. died Saturday after a brief illness. He was 80.

Newton was born Oct. 18, 1918, in New York City, and raised in Denver. After high school, he served in the Army as a lieutenant in World War II.

After the war, Newton moved to Alhambra and began a lifelong career in mimeography and duplicating machines, the precursors to modern copy machines. He worked in sales and management.

He lived in various Southern California cities, including San Fernando and San Diego. About five years ago, Newton moved to Ventura County and settled in Simi Valley to be close to two of his five daughters.

In his free time, he enjoyed golf and reading.

Newton’s daughter Carol Barcola of Simi Valley described her father as a private man who believed family was the most important thing in life.

Newton is also survived by daughters Diane Parkhill of Lancaster, Sherrie Newton of Moorpark, Mary Garcia of Huntington Beach and Susan Furniss of Van Nuys; two brothers, Axel Johnson of Aurora, Colo., and Fred Newton of Denver; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The Rev. Jerome E. Kahler of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church will lead a service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura. Interment will be private.
