CLU to Confer More Than 500 Degrees

Cal Lutheran University will issue two honorary degrees and degrees to more than 500 graduate and undergraduate students at commencement services, officials said.

Jim Ford, chaplain for the U.S. House of Representatives, will be the commencement speaker and will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters. An honorary doctor of laws degree will be conferred on Rolf Ekeus, Sweden’s ambassador to the United States.

Ford earned a bachelor’s degree from Gustavus Adolphus College, a master of divinity from Augustana Seminary and a doctor of divinity degree from Wagner College. He has served as a Lutheran pastor and chaplain of West Point.

Ekeus served as Sweden’s representative to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and chaired the United Nations’ Committee on Chemical Weapons before becoming a member of the Canberra Commission on the Elimination of Nuclear Weapons in 1996.

He has played a key role in numerous disarmament negotiations, including serving as the U.N.’s chief weapons inspector in Iraq.

A prayer service will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Samuelson Chapel at the Thousand Oaks campus, with commencement services to follow at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Clef Stadium. For more information about graduation services, call university relations at 493-3151.
