Cunningham Scores Two Goals to Lead Columbus Over San Jose

Jeff Cunningham scored twice to give the Columbus Crew a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Clash on Sunday in front of 9,931 people.

The win put the Crew (5-2) in first place in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of D.C. United.

Cunningham, making his second start of the season, opened scoring in the 17th minute of play. Clash goalkeeper Joe Cannon stopped a shot by Billy Thompson, but Crew defender Thomas Dooley got the rebound and sent a pass to Cunningham for the goal.

San Jose (5-3) tied the game in the 38th minute when defender Jamie Clark scored on a pass from Mauricio Wright.
