Jazz Crawl

It’ll take a more than a Manhattan cab ride to get from one place to another, but there’s as much first-rate jazz in the Southland as in the Big Apple . . .

* Catalina Bar & Grill. One of the two rooms dedicated to booking internationally known jazz talent, this month featuring Jimmy Smith and Branford Marsalis. Shows nightly at 8:30 and 10, and at 7 and 9 p.m. Sunday. Cover varies. Two-drink minimum. 1640 N. Cahuenga Blvd., Hollywood. (323) 466-2210.

* The Jazz Bakery. Not exactly a club, but favored by musicians for its waiter-less, cash register-less concert setting. Like Catalina, it is a destination for international talent, with Charles Lloyd and Jacky Terrasson arriving this month. Performances nightly at 8 and 10 and Sunday afternoons. Cover varies. 3233 Helms Blvd., Culver City. (310) 271-9039.

* Steamers Cafe. Orange County’s laid-back restaurant and showcase for the finest local talent, with Charles McPherson, Gerri Gibbs and Stephanie Haynes appearing this month. Music from 8 p.m. Cover varies. 138 W. Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton. (714) 871-8800.

* Rocco Ristorante. Perched in the hills of Bel-Air, Rocco balances its fine Italian cuisine with equally fine music from an array of local talent Monday through Saturday. This month Alan Pasqua, Sal Marquez, Bobby Bradford and Ronald Muldrew are featured fare. Music from 9:30 p.m. No cover. 2930 Beverly Glen Circle, Bel-Air.

* Fifth St. Dick’s Coffee Company. A scene-type place that flows out onto the sidewalk. Music resonates from an upstairs loft, with late jam sessions on Fridays. Music from 9:30 p.m. Cover varies. 3335 W. 43rd Place, Leimert Park. (323) 296-3970.

* La Ve Lee. Latin jazz is the specialty at this small but cozy room, with congalero Poncho Sanchez making several appearances this month. Music from 9:30 p.m. Cover varies. 12514 Ventura Blvd., Studio City. (818) 980-8158.
