8 Elementary Schools Are Given Instruments
Eight Los Angeles elementary schools, including two in the Valley, were awarded $200,000 in musical instruments this week as part of an initiative to improve public schools’ music education programs.
A partnership between cable channel VH1 and cable company MediaOne provided the instruments to the public schools, said Bob Morrison, a VH1 spokesman. Vinedale Elementary in Sun Valley and Plainview Avenue Elementary in Tujunga were among the recipients.
This is the second year that “VH1 Save the Music,” a nonprofit foundation that provides instruments to schools nationwide, donated instruments, Morrison said.
“It’s about giving a child a complete education and a set of tools to be successful later in life,” Morrison said.
At Plainview, second-grade teacher Lisa Lee applied for the donation of instruments. Many of the students don’t have the resources to buy their own, said Lee, who also works with the school’s chorus.
“Some children may have a real love for it,” Lee said.
“It’s our job to give them a hands-on opportunity.”
