Aftershocks Ease at Mammoth Lakes, U.S. Agency Says

The U.S. Geological Survey said Monday that the chances of another magnitude 5 earthquake in the next seven days southeast of Mammoth Lakes is 10% to 20%.

The scientists said there have been more than 1,000 aftershocks since a 5.6 quake hit that region Saturday. Twenty-six of these had magnitudes 3.0 or greater and five had magnitudes 4.0 or greater.

However, through Monday afternoon, aftershock activity was tapering off. The scientists again cautioned, however, that “anyone venturing into the back country should be aware that continued aftershock activity is capable of triggering rock falls.”

Property damage from the quakes has been minimal, and there have been no injuries.
