A Museum With All the Trimmings

Share

The Brits are so crazy about mowing their lawns, they have a whole museum dedicated to tools of the turf. The British Lawnmower Museum in Lancashire houses more than 100 restored lawn mowers, garden memorabilia and one of the largest toy lawn mower collections in the world.

Early models by Rolls-Royce, Royal Enfield, Hawker Siddley, Perkins Diesel and others date back to the invention of the lawn mower in the 1830s. Also on view is one of the first racing lawn mowers in the world, which was designed and built by museum curator Brian Radam, a lawn mower racing champion.

The museum’s latest project is to create an exhibition of “Lawnmowers of the Rich and Famous.” Those collected so far include Hilda Ogden’s from Coronation Street and Nicholas Parsons’.
