The City Council this week voted to stop charging fees to hold garage sales, but residents will be limited to two sales a year. Each sale can be held for only two consecutive days, city officials said. The ordinance, which goes into effect next month, also restricts items sold to personal property and they have to be displayed on private property, not on sidewalks or in the street.

The council also set regulations on signs that advertise garage sales. “We will take down signs posted on telephone poles, light poles and public property,” said Joyce Rosenthal, director of development services.
