Arizona State Is 5 Shots Ahead at Regional Event

UC Irvine senior Mike Lawrence shot a two-over 74 at the Tucson National Thursday to tie for 33rd after the first day of the NCAA Men’s Golf West Regional.

Brigham Young University’s Jose Garrido is in first place with a four-under 68. Garrido has a one-shot lead over Arizona State’s Jeff Quinney and Matt Jones, and Fresno State’s Todd Rose.

Arizona State is the team leader at five-under 283, five shots ahead of Nevada Las Vegas and BYU.

Chris Berry (Esperanza High) of UNLV shot 76 and is tied for 55th.

Led by B.J. Schlagenhauf’s 72, UCLA was tied for eighth place at 296. Jason Allred also shot a 72 to lead Pepperdine to 11th place at 298. USC and UC Santa Barbara struggled, finishing in the bottom two spots. The tournament ends Saturday.

The top nine teams and top two individuals from the regionals qualify for the NCAA Championships June 2-5 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Jennifer Rosales of USC, the defending national champion, moved into a tie for fourth place with a par 71 in the second round of the NCAA women’s golf championships at Tulsa, Okla.

Rosales is tied with Tamie Durdin of Pepperdine at 146, four strokes behind Grace Park of Arizona State. Pepperdine’s Jenny Glasgow (Corona del mar High) is at 149 after a 74 Thursday. Pepperdine is second in the team competition, six strokes behind Duke.
