Boggs Activated From Disabled List

Wade Boggs resumed his quest for 3,000 career hits Friday night when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays activated him from the 15-day disabled list.

Boggs, sidelined since May 6 because of a strained left hamstring, was batting .276 when he went on the disabled list for the second time in his 18-year career.

Boggs is 55 hits shy of 3,000 after going two for four against the Angels.

The Devil Rays optioned outfielder Randy Winn to triple-A Durham.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Ramon Martinez threw 84 pitches in a simulated game for the first time since he underwent shoulder surgery last June.

Martinez said he felt no pain after throwing.

Red Sox pitching coach Joe Kerrigan said Martinez probably will return the first or second week of July.

Texas Rangers shortstop Royce Clayton was activated from the disabled list after a two-game rehabilitation stint at triple-A Oklahoma. The Rangers optioned shortstop Kelly Dransfeldt to Oklahoma to make room for Clayton. . . . Sandy Alomar had a bone chip removed from his left knee and the Cleveland Indians catcher is expected to be sidelined for at least a month.
