County Agricultural Chief

* Re “Agriculture Chief Put on Probation,” Feb. 26.

The events surrounding the Ventura County Board of Supervisors’ action taken in closed session regarding the agricultural commissioner are of serious concern to our members. Although it is certainly proper under state law to review personnel matters in closed session, we question the public result of the action they have taken.

Agriculture is the most important industry in Ventura County and as such needs to be afforded the attention and respect it deserves. Our agricultural commissioner has worked diligently for years with an underfunded and understaffed department and has always been helpful and watchful.

The balance between farm interests and environmental hysteria seems to widen as urban pressures continue to invade historically rural areas. This is a real problem we must all work to resolve, but within the realm of common sense, fair play and solid ethics.

The politicizing of the agricultural commissioner’s office is contrary to the well-being of Ventura County agriculture and all residents. We hope the board will reinstate the agricultural commissioner promptly so that his department will be able to address the issues of concern.

Respectfully on behalf of 75 member firms, associates and affiliates.
