Valley College, CSUN Offer Summer Remedial Courses
Cal State Northridge and Valley College officials say they will sign an agreement Monday to create a joint program offering remedial courses this summer for students planning to enter CSUN in the fall.
CSUN President Blenda J. Wilson and Valley College President Tyree Wieder will approve the partnership during a ceremony at 8 a.m. in the University Club at Zelzah Avenue and Nordhoff Street.
“This is a great opportunity for our students to jump-start their remediation,” said Margaret Fieweger, CSUN’s associate vice president for undergraduate studies. “Working with Valley [College] allows us to offer a high-quality program for low student costs.”
Under the terms of the partnership, students entering the university for the first time can complete part or all of their remediation requirements in mathematics or writing by taking courses offered by Valley College at CSUN, said Carmen Ramos Chandler, a university spokeswoman.
Students will not be required to pay the usual CSUN summer fees of $140 per unit, but instead will pay the community college’s cost of $12 per unit. The courses will be offered July 6 through Aug. 13.
University officials said the partnership with Valley College was developed in part as a response to the California State University system executive order that requires freshmen to complete remediation within their first year of enrollment.
More than 100 entering freshmen have signed up for the new program, university officials said.
