Listings of HUD Homes Available at Main Library

House hunters interested in learning about homes for sale through the federal Housing and Urban Development Department may now view lists of such homes using an information kiosk in the Los Angeles Central Library.

By using the free kiosk, people can read and print out sale lists of “HUD homes”--those with HUD-insured mortgages that have been foreclosed and that are now owned by the federal agency.

In addition, the same information is available on HUD’s Web site (https://www.hud.gov), ranging from HUD-assisted community development projects to advice on home buying, said Thomas Honore of HUD’s Los Angeles office.

The kiosk, in the library’s business and economics section, is one of 48 that HUD has installed around the country to make HUD programs more accessible to consumers.

Users have logged 12,000 to 14,000 “page views” a month at the Los Angeles kiosk since its installation in September.

HUD officials said kiosk users most frequently look up information about homes for sale in L.A. County and about how to find housing using HUD resources.

Other kiosks in California in Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego, with one planned for Santa Ana later this year.

HUD plans to expand the number of kiosks nationwide so more people without Internet access can view the wealth of information available through the agency, Honore said.

The Los Angeles Central Library is downtown at 611 W. 6th St.
