Golfers Raise $15,000 for Food Program

Golfers raised more than $15,000 for Ventura County Food Share in a tournament sponsored by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Each of the golfers who played in the benefit Friday at the Los Robles Golf & Country Club paid a $95 entry fee that went to Food Share.

“It’s a fabulous amount,” Food Share business manager Judith Bowles said. “Our donations from functions people put on for us are sometimes $1,000 or less. This is an extremely important donation.”

For every dollar the tournament raised, Food Share will be able to serve 35 meals to the needy, officials said.

The Oxnard-based private organization, supported by government funding, grants and public donations, buys bulk food and receives surplus crops from farmers to provide food supplies and hot meals to those in need.

“We have over 200 active agencies that are charitable. They distribute directly to needy families and individuals,” Bowles said. “They feed approximately 300,000 meals to more than 34,000 Ventura County members each month.”

She added that 45% of the people fed by the program are children, and 19% are over age 60.
