An Orange County attorney and his wife have pleaded guilty to lying to two Southern California lending institutions and the Internal Revenue Service to obtain a $600,000 commercial property loan, the U.S. attorney said Monday.

Charles F. Benninghoff III, 54, of San Juan Capistrano submitted fake tax returns to First Fidelity Thrift & Loan as part of a loan application. Benninghoff and his wife, Nancy, 51, also submitted false documents to Newport Beach-based Downey Savings & Loan.

Neither Benninghoff nor his attorney could be reached for comment Monday. The couple is expected to be sentenced July 19.
