Maglev Study
The regional magnetic levitation train system proposed by the Southern California Assn. of Governments is a fiasco in the making (“U.S. to Fund Study of Local High-Speed Rail,” May 22). The notion it could be built with private funds is highly questionable. The intention to place it in the median of freeways is probably not feasable. And the time saving versus conventional steel-wheel rail for short trips is laughably small.
It makes more sense to upgrade our existing Metrolink commuter rail system with electrification and grade separation. That would cost a fraction of maglev and doesn’t depend on unproven technology.
