Older Drivers

I have read with great interest of the unfortunate death of Brandi Mitock at the hand of a 96-year-old driver and that the bill introduced by state Sen. Tom Hayden to require testing of drivers 75 and older has been met with some resistance. I refer to the article written by Jules Draznin (Voices, May 22) opposing such legislation. What planet are the AARP and Draznin on? The intent of the proposed law is that such persons who pass the more stringent testing will be allowed to keep their licenses, and those who don’t will not. I see no discrimination.

At 35 years old I require glasses to obtain 20/20 vision and my hair is disappearing at an alarming rate; what other physical and mental maladies await me as I get older I can only imagine and dread. To not acknowledge the general deterioration of the body and mind as we get older and the effects it has on our performance as drivers is simply living in denial.
