The City Council this week approved on a 4-1 vote an ordinance prohibiting residents from leaving garbage or trash containers in public view for more than 24 hours. Councilwoman Patricia Bortle voted against the measure but was not available Thursday for comment. The ordinance will go into effect June 24 and applies to all public right-of-ways and areas visible from public streets, such as residential front or side yards. City officials said the penalty for homeowners not in compliance will be a letter of warning followed by a misdemeanor citation.
