Other Funds May Be Used for Job Center
An area of Pacoima left out of a youth jobs grant can tap other federal funds to set up and run a program to help young people find employment, Los Angeles officials said Monday.
The city’s Community Development Department has drafted an action plan that calls for the city to set up a job center for people ages 14 to 21, noting that City Councilman Alex Padilla has identified a possible site for the center.
The center might include an alternative high school and child-care center to help young people get their high school diploma and prepare them for getting a job. The program would cost about $700,000 annually, which might be available from federal block grant funds.
The council’s Community and Economic Development Committee delayed action on the proposal Monday after Padilla’s office asked for more time to work out details.
Padilla had been upset that Pacoima was left out of an application for a federal Youth Opportunities Grant, which would have funded a jobs program.
