The Ventura County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $2.19-million contract Tuesday with a project management firm that will oversee the design and construction of the juvenile detention center.

Sverdrup CRSS, based in Sacramento, will help hire companies to design and construct the new center, which will replace the county’s aging and overcrowded facilities.

The board also voted to include a juvenile courthouse in the overall design of the complex.

“At this point, we don’t have the money to build a courthouse,” said Terry Dryer, chief deputy administrative officer. “But it makes sense for planning to include it in the design.”

Supervisors also approved hiring two program assistants to help order furnishings and to design the interior.

“This is an important project,” said Supervisor Judy Mikels, who sits on a steering committee overseeing the project. “And this is a good step to make sure it’s done right the first time.”

Officials plan to start construction on the state-of-the-art center in June 2001, and plan to open the facility in September 2003.
