Starting next fall, students in the Placentia-Yorba Linda school district can look forward to learning the four R’s: reading, writing, ‘rithmetic and . . . respect.

The district has unveiled its new Character Education Curriculum plan, which will bring 13 character traits into the students’ everyday course of study. A committee of 50 teachers, administrators and parents met for three years to develop the plan to bring respect, integrity/honesty, responsibility, diligence, self-discipline, civic duty, compassion, justice, cooperation, manners, good judgment, humility and courage into the classroom.

A trial run of the program, believed to be the only one of its kind in Orange County, will begin in January. Teachers will be trained in the program during the summer months so instruction can begin for all students in September 2000.
