400 Adoptions to Be Processed on Saturday

California’s chief justice will be among the judicial officers Saturday overseeing the largest ever one-day finalization of adoptions in the county.

As part of “Adoption Saturday,” Justice Ronald M. George and 21 other judges and court commissioners will process 400 adoption confirmation hearings.

Normally, families can wait months before adoption proceedings can be scheduled at the Edmund E. Edelman Children’s Court in Monterey Park.

Saturday’s event is the second year that a coalition--which includes the Alliance for Children’s Rights, the Public Counsel Law Center and the law firm of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher--have worked with the county agencies to permanently place hundreds of foster children, county officials said.

The hearings will use about 20 courtrooms to handle all of the final procedures, a Los Angeles Superior Court spokeswoman said.

In addition to judges and lawyers, dozens of county workers who staff the courts will volunteer their time to help move the proceedings along Saturday.
