SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

City Manager Robert Dominguez is expected to present a proposal at a public study session Monday in which the Los Alamitos and Cypress police departments would consolidate services.

Members of the City Council will decide whether the proposed merger would be beneficial to residents of both cities that are adjacent to each other and share similar demographics.

Concerns regarding loss of community identity, whether there will be a substantial reduction in costs, how the patrol cars would be marked, and the need for response times to either remain the same or better will be some of the items addressed, Dominguez said.

Another important aspect of the proposed merger, he said, would be that all of the police personnel (28 sworn officers and nine civilian employees) be included in the deal.

If council members decide to continue discussions with the Cypress Police Department and evaluate the situation formally, it could be placed on the agenda and be up for a vote within 60 days. The study session will begin at 5 p.m. in council chambers, 3191 Katella Ave.
