Boy Scouts to Collect Food for the Needy

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will blanket the central and west San Fernando Valley with 30,000 empty grocery bags Saturday as part of a massive food drive for the needy.

More than 1,000 Scouts, parents and leaders representing the Western Los Angeles County Council of the Boy Scouts of America will participate in the 12th annual Scouting for Food Campaign targeting homes west of the San Diego Freeway to the Ventura County line. Scouts will leave bags on doorsteps Saturday and return the following Saturday, Nov. 13, to collect nonperishable food donations.

Last year, the effort netted 22 pallets of food valued at $20,000 to $30,000, said Chris Rowe, Scouting for Food chairwoman.

“We probably feed these [food banks] throughout the holidays. For two days of work, we collect three months’ worth of food,” said Jon Cieslak, district executive for the Las Colinas District, which serves the West Valley.

In addition to the food collected from individuals, Albertson’s has donated six pallets of food and Ralphs will give four pallets and the empty grocery bags.
