CASTAIC LAKE--Trout were stocked in both lakes this week, so expect a decent striped bass bite through the weekend in the upper lake. Jerry Gallimore, Santa Paula, caught a 13-pounder using a rubber trout. Trout are being caught on standard baits. The largemouth bass bite has slowed.

LAKE PIRU--Trout fishing is good in the morning and slow to fair after 9 or so. Trollers are doing best using Needlefish and Kastmasters. An occasional bass is being caught on a plastic worm or a night crawler.

IRVINE LAKE--Trout fishing has improved with the cooler weather and limits are not out of the question, and some of the fish are 10 pounds or more. A 12-pounder by Dan Hughes, La Habra Heights, on a Roostertail at the west shore, tops the list.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Trout season opened Thursday after the stocking of thousands of pounds of pretty big fish.

CORONA LAKE--A 14-pound 6-ounce rainbow tops the trout list, but trophy-sized fish have been jumping onto hooks all week. As long as the nights are cool and the days not too warm, fishing should remain hot for a while. Power Bait has been best.

OSO RESERVOIR--Bass are still chasing shad all over the lake and conditions should be good for another month or so. Top catch, a 12-pounder that took a plastic worm near the aeration system. Night fishing for catfish is the next-best thing.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Night fishing for catfish is fair with sardines and mackerel. A few were checked in at more than 10 pounds. Bass fishing is slow but persistent anglers are catching some. Top bass was one 8-10 caught on a Castaic Bluegill lure.

LAKE PERRIS--Trout fishing is fair with night crawlers. Some limits. Bluegills are active at the island and Bernasconi. The bigger bass are gorging on shad and uninterested in anything else. Lots of small bass are being caught, though.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass, trout and catfish are all showing at the cleaning station. Marcus Maxwell, Ontario, had four stripers totaling 29-9. He used a homemade plug at the east end.

BIG BEAR--With fall come frigid mornings and evenings and only occasional limits of pan-sized rainbows. The end of the season is close. Power Bait, Rapalas and Needlefish are good choices.

SAN DIEGO LAKES--Bass lakes El Capitan, Hodges and San Vicente are fair, but the big news is that Miramar opens Saturday after the stocking of 2,400 pounds of trout, and San Vicente this week received a plant of 4,000 pounds.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Big trout have begun cruising the shore, looking for streams in which to spawn, but they’re feeding along the way and being nailed by those using Power Bait, Thomas Buoyants, night crawlers and even streamer flies. An 8-8 trout was caught on yellow Power Bait.

EASTERN SIERRA--The general season is over, but fishing for big Alpers rainbows goes on in Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Owens below Five Bridges, as the community is stocking 500 pounds of Alpers every week through November. The lower Owens is flowing at an ideal pace and fly fishermen using caddis flies and small streamers are doing well early and late.
