Late Field Goal Puts Irvine on Top

Jessob Reisbeck kicked a 32-yard field goal with 2:27 left in the game to lift Irvine to a 16-14 Sea View League victory over Laguna Hills Thursday night at Mission Viejo High.

Reisbeck had missed a point-after attempt following Irvine’s second touchdown. He also missed field goals of 25 and 35 yards in the first half.

But he came through on the Vaqueros’ final drive to give Irvine (6-2-1 overall, 3-1 in league) the victory.

Irvine got a strong performance from senior running back Keith Short, who rushed for 108 yards on 23 carries.

Laguna Hills was led by receiver Mike Dale, who had two touchdown catches totaling 110 yards.

Irvine took the lead on a five-yard touchdown run by Short with 9:57 left in the second quarter.

But Dale hauled in a 66-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Champlin with 5:48 left in the second quarter to help the Hawks tie the score, 7-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Short returned the ball 89 yards for a touchdown to give Irvine a 13-7 lead.

Laguna Hills (5-4, 2-2) moved out to a 14-13 lead on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Champlin to Dale with 11:44 left in the game. However, Irvine got the ball back with six minutes left and drove from its 25 to the Hawk 14, setting up the game-winning field goal by Reisbeck.
