Shaw Seems to Be Earning a Longer Stay

Brian Shaw, the last Laker added to the roster, has quickly become Coach Phil Jackson’s first guard off the bench, and might be moving toward a reserve role even after Kobe Bryant is activated later this month.

“Brian has a knack of doing things on the move with the basketball,” Jackson said before Saturday night’s loss at Portland. “He’s a driver-penetrator and has been able to shoot his shot with surprising accuracy.”

Shaw, 6 feet 6, averaged 15.5 minutes in the first two Laker victories, and scored 10 points against Vancouver, with four assists and three rebounds.

Jackson said he wants to see Shaw, a point guard for most of his NBA career but an off guard for the Lakers so far, move into a lead-guard role, backing up Derek Fisher or Ron Harper.

When asked about Dennis Rodman’s recent arrest, Jackson shrugged and quoted Rodman.

“He did say, ‘It’s one of those things,’ ” Jackson said, smiling. “What things are those? I’ve never had one of those things, like that.”
