Buena, Ventura Follow Suit

Ventura and Buena, which play Thursday for the Channel League championship, showed the same characteristics last week that they have displayed all season.

Ventura (9-0, 3-0 in league play) has won five games by six points or fewer, so it was no surprise that the Cougars eked out a 29-26 victory over Hueneme.

Buena (8-1, 3-0), which has outscored opponents, 304-106, since a season-opening 42-27 loss to Westlake, trounced Santa Barbara, 49-20.

“I think if [Buena] played Westlake now, they would beat Westlake,” said Ventura Coach Phil McCune. “They’re a completely different team now. They’ve got everything going for them. I think they’re the best team in our division right now.”
