The city’s Public Works Department will begin constructing a sand berm today to protect oceanfront property from possible winter flooding.
The crews will move sand from the west to the east part of the beach. The berm is expected to be completed Nov. 15.
The beach loses about 6,000 cubic yards of sand every year because of erosion, making homes on the coast vulnerable to flooding during storms, said Steve Badum, director of the city’s Public Works Department.
