Standing at the birthplace of the city of Los Angeles, Mayor Richard Riordan and Mexican Consul General Jose Luis Bernal on Tuesday celebrated the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Los Angeles and Mexico City.

The two men praised the Sister City program for strengthening the economic, cultural and political ties between the cities.

“I hope the bridge of friendship will continue connecting the hearts of our people in the next century,” said Riordan, during a ceremony at Plaza Park on historic Olvera Street.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Master Chorale will highlight Mexico City’s music, film and performing arts when the group hosts the “Mexico City Bellas Artes Ball” at the Regal Biltmore Hotel.

Next week, the chorale will also host Coro de la Universidad Veracruzana, a guest choir from Xalapa, Mexico during a special program called “Choral Treasures from Mexico” at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
