Animal Circuses

Share

* Isn’t it time for people to stop patronizing animal circuses? There are several non-animal circuses that rely on talent and not the exploitation and humiliation of other creatures.

The Captive Elephant Accident Prevention Act recently was introduced in Congress. This bill, which would ban the use of elephants in traveling shows or for rides, was co-sponsored by Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley), and we thank him for his foresight.

As well as protecting the public, this bill would alleviate the suffering of captive elephants--the constant travel, the forced performances, the chains, the bull hooks, the punitive training methods, etc. Circus animals endure intolerable conditions--their natural instincts suppressed in total captivity, and allowed food, water and exercise only at the inclination of the handlers.

A growing number of cities are prohibiting the appearance of exotic animal acts on city property or within city limits. The mayor of Seattle plans to seek a ban on such performances in that city, according to newspaper reports.

It would be heartening to see a few of our local leaders at the forefront of this long overdue reform. When circuses come to town, would it not be prudent to consider the plight of the animals and avoid such an oppressive spectacle? These animals have no choice, but we do!
