SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 67-year-old woman was fatally injured in a hit-and-run accident in Stanton late Wednesday when a suspected drunk driver crashed into an oncoming car after making an illegal U-turn, authorities said Thursday.

Miguel Acantara Romero, 33, of Orange was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence, said Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Rich Paddock.

Romero was driving a 1999 Ford pickup south on Beach Boulevard shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, Paddock said, when he made a sudden turn into oncoming traffic, colliding with a 1992 Nissan near Plaza Way.

Alajandrina Mojica, a passenger in the Nissan, was critically injured and was taken to Western Medical Center-Anaheim, where she died. The driver of the Nissan was not injured.

Paddock said Romero, who was also uninjured, tried to flee but was arrested by deputies a block from the accident scene.

Romero is being held at Orange County Jail. Paddock said the accident is under investigation.
