Rap music star Master P has joined the International Basketball League’s San Diego Stingrays, about two weeks after he was waived by the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.

Two UC Santa Barbara players have been arrested at Santa Barbara and accused of running up more than $3,000 in charges by using a telephone calling card that didn’t belong to them.

Larry Bell, a senior guard who started 14 games for the team last season, and Eric Hare, a redshirt freshman forward, were arrested Wednesday at the apartment they share. They were picked up on suspicion of felony fraudulent use of a stolen calling card.

In a prepared statement, school athletic officials announced the players “have been suspended from the team indefinitely, pending the outcome of the investigation.”

North Carolina Coach Bill Guthridge reinstated guards Ed Cota and Terrence Newby, charged with misdemeanor assault after a Halloween brawl.

Newby said he and Cota were trying to break up a fight involving their friends and another group.

Utah forward Hanno Mottola will sit out the first six weeks of the season because of a torn knee ligament. . . . Forwards Chris Walton, son of Hall of Famer Bill Walton, and Aerick Sanders of Gardena High signed national letters of intent to attend San Diego State.

Nathalie Tauziat of France rallied from a 5-2, third-set deficit to beat Jennifer Capriati, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, in the second round of the Advanta Championships at Villanova, Pa.

Venus Williams overcame a slow start to roll past 16-year-old qualifier Daniela Bedanova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-1, and Sandrine Testud of France beat seventh-seeded Dominique Van Roost of Belgium, 6-4, 6-4, to also advance to the quarterfinals.

Amy Frazier beat 17-year-old Belgian Justine Henin, 7-5, 6-4, to keep alive a slim hope of making the 16-woman field for the Chase Championships in New York. Frazier must beat the top player in the world, Martina Hingis, today to bump Arantxa Sanchez Vicario from the field.

A record-tying five Swedes made the quarterfinals in the Stockholm Open.

Thomas Enqvist, a native Stockholmer, top-seeded this year and a former two-time winner of the oldest indoor tournament on the ATP Tour, led the way as he beat Germany’s Jens Knippschild, 6-2, 6-4.

The other Swedes advancing were wild-card entry Andreas Vinciguerra, who beat Gianluca Pozzi of Italy 6-3, 6-3; Magnus Norman, who beat South Africa’s Wayne Ferreira, 7-5, 6-2; Jonas Bjorkman, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Swiss qualifier George Bastl, and Magnus Gustafsson, who beat fourth-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).

Top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov beat David Prinosil of Germany, 6-4, 7-5, to reach the quarterfinals of Moscow’s $1-million Kremlin Cup. Two-time champion Marc Rosset of Switzerland, seeded seventh, defeated Sargis Sargsian of Armenia, 6-3, 6-4.

Marcelo Rios of Chile, at one time ranked No. 1 in the world, had surgery in Santiago on Wednesday to alleviate pain associated with a hip injury. Chilean newspapers reported he will be out for four months, meaning he will miss the Australian Open in January.

Italian cycling star Marco Pantani refused to answer questions from prosecutors at Turin investigating him for use of banned substances. Pantani, who competes for the Mercatone Uno team, handed over a stack of documents he expected would clear his name.

The retractable roof at Seattle’s Safeco Field has been acting up again--and some of the problems appear likely to linger into 2000. The roof was jammed shut for about seven hours Thursday, despite working fine Wednesday, Seattle Mariner spokeswoman Rebecca Hale said. The problem was solved around 3 p.m. Thursday.

Former lightweight champ Shane Mosley of Pomona has agreed to fight Willie Wise, who beat Julio Cesar Chavez in his last fight, on Jan. 22, according to Lou DiBella, vice president of Time Warner Sports, parent company of TVKO. A site has not been set. . . . Norwegian Bjorn Daehlie, the world’s winningest cross-country skier, will miss the season due to back surgery. . . .
